Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan
A totally British and extremely famous Luxury 5 star Colonial masterpiece built by Thomas Cook in 1899, making it the 2nd oldest Colonial Hotel behind Mena House in Cairo. The Old Cataract Hotel is one of memphis tour’s Partner Hotels and a proud association for us. One of our top recommended Hotels and the best in Aswan, offering unique services such as top luxury spa treatments and afternoon English High Tea at sunset along with gourmet fine dining. Situated right on the Cataract Islands of the East bank of the Nile, it could not be in a more favoured spot for sightseeing and local attractions and amenities. Occupied and visited by a host of famous figures such as Tsar Nicholas II, Winston Churchill, Howard Carter, Margaret Thatcher, Jimmy Carter, Princess Diana, Queen Noor and Agatha Christie (who at this Hotel and Luxor’s Winter Palace Hotel wrote her novel ‘Death on the Nile’). Many local attractions await you such as the Aswan High Dam, Philae temple and more.

- Currency Exchange Service
Here in Egypt, the local currency is known as the Egyptian Pound. It can often be difficult to get smaller notes so it is advisable when you can, to change 200, 100 and 50 notes when you can to either 5, 10, or 20 Pound notes. The Hotel reception will offer you an exchange service and their will be a small commission charge on changing currencies ( they will take British Pounds, US Dollars and Euros). There are ATM machines and banks in Aswan City which will also take a small charge for using the machine overseas.
- Transportation
There is local transport in and around Aswan, with various options such as tours to Abu Simbel, and camel rides to St Simeon’s Monastery. Local Taxis are everywhere but not on the meter, so set a reasonable fare before getting in. There are also the local minibuses used by the locals, safe and very cheap but not really used by the tourists.Memphis Tours provides an excellent transport service with spacious vehicles taking you around Aswan and further afield.
